In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, artificial intelligence has emerged as both a transformative force and a growing source of global concern. Its integration into military systems, particularly in the form of autonomous weapons, has introduced unprecedented challenges to international peace and security. These ‘Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS)’ have the capability to identify and engage targets with limited or no human intervention, fundamentally reshaping the nature of warfare and raising critical ethical, legal, and strategic questions. The absence of a universally accepted legal framework creates ambiguity regarding responsibility for actions carried out by autonomous systems, complicating the enforcement of international humanitarian law. This committee is uniquely positioned to address these concerns by fostering dialogue and building consensus among member states. While existing instruments, such as the Geneva Convention, provide foundational principles, they do not adequately account for the complexities introduced by the presence of AI in different fields and AI-driven warfare. The agenda calls upon delegates to engage with these multifaceted challenges and work towards a balanced and forward-looking framework with the purpose of integrating AI in the different facets of society.
